Administration by the hour. Are you crazy?

Hi everyone! 👋🏼 This blog is a little different for me. It’s sort of a get to know something about me, blog.

I’m always posting about 'how to do' this and 'why you should do' that, but I thought I might take some time to answer one of the most common questions I get asked, online and in person.

This is asked of me by clients, potential clients and colleagues in the industry.

“Why don’t you offer service packages and hourly retainer packages?”

I’m going to let you in on a little secret, first, though.

At the start of this year 📅, after just 6 months in business, I started to look at building a service package. An administration package that included some basic social media management, blog writing and business administration.

I did get quite far through the process. I had images, flyers, web pages ready to publish, detailed information about each package and the pricing. I was almost ready to launch 🚀.

But each time I came close to finalising everything, something stopped me. It took me a good few weeks to make time and pay attention to the voice in my head.

Why was I hesitant?

Because, what I was doing was going against the reason I hadn’t created business administration packages in the first place 🤦🏼‍♀️.

I believe, when it comes to business administration, that every single client of mine is different. Different in needs, wants and personality. I want each of you to feel valued and receive a personalised service to suit your needs perfectly. A service that could grow as your business did 📈, change as your direction changed.

That wasn’t going to happen if I tied you into a package of set services.

I have a blog coming up in a few weeks that goes in-depth into the difference between service packages, hourly retainer packages, and hourly rates so I’ll stick to the basics here, for now.

Service Packages

When you look at a package how often do you see something that you don’t want?

Because I’m a food lover, I think about a degustation menu. You get 7 courses for $xx and this is the menu. The only adjustments are made for dietary requirements. Do you want wine 🍷 with that? Add $xx. But what happens if you don’t like truffles? Or really wanted chocolate 🍫 for dessert?

Nothing, you don’t get a say in it. It’s set out for you.

Monthly Retainers

When you think about a monthly retainer of hours. You pre-pay for these hours. You don’t get to roll them over. So, what do you do? You spend your whole month watching the clock ⏰, making sure that you use every single minute.

Hourly Rates

Hourly rates, well, if it’s like anywhere else I’ve looked, you’re going to pay more per hour as a penalty for not committing to a set block of hours. I get it from a business point of view (it’s guaranteeing income) but from your point of view that’s unfair.

Why should you be punished for not knowing how many hours you need? Only needing 2 hours this month and 10 next month?

You shouldn’t and that’s why I’ve stuck to my guns and just thrown away everything I created over the last few months.

I’m still not sure what prompted me to change the way I was doing business but I’m glad I took the time to stop and think about it. No one is complaining about what I’m currently doing so as the saying goes:

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

So, it is with great pleasure that I present to you … my hourly rates!

I currently offer 3 different support services to you:

Personal Assistance

Simple, unadulterated, business administrative support.

Things like:

  • Data entry & word processing

  • Research

  • Document formatting

  • Accounts follow-ups

  • Spreadsheet management

  • Event planning

  • Inbox management

$50 per hour

Lifestyle Management

A few weeks ago, I wrote an in-depth blog for you to explain what lifestyle management is. Take some time to read it here.

Things like:

  • Online shopping

  • Event Planning

  • Appointment setting

  • Reservation booking

  • Email management

  • Paying bills

Providing this service is extremely personal, I guarantee full confidentiality in all matters.

$60 per hour

Copy editing & proofreading

As a true believer that you should never check your own work, I offer this to you whenever, however, and for whatever you need.

I'll check:

  • Spelling

  • Grammar

  • Style

  • Consistency

  • Accuracy

$0.02c per word

I do still believe that there is a place for packages, in certain situations; think social media management or content creation, but when it comes to business administration I’m sticking to my gut and that will never change!
